Empowering the Golden Years: SCHOOL’s Vriddha Mitra Initiative Seeks Physiotherapists for Geriatric Care

The landscape of elderly care in India is evolving, moving beyond clinical settings and directly into the heart of communities. Leading this transformation is the Society of Community Health Oriented Operational Links (SCHOOL), a non-profit organization dedicated to achieving "SDG-3- Good Health and Wellbeing" for India's most vulnerable populations.

Through its flagship initiative, Vriddha Mitra, SCHOOL is actively building an age-friendly ecosystem where older people can lead dignified and secured lives. To further this vision, the organization is currently seeking dedicated Physiotherapists for full-time roles based in Mumbai to provide specialized geriatric and community-based care.

Redefining Care through Vriddha Mitra

Vriddha Mitra is more than just a health program; it is a movement to change how society thinks, feels, and acts toward the elderly. The initiative focuses on three core pillars:

  • Support Structures: Developing frameworks that foster the inherent abilities of older people.

  • Responsive Services: Delivering care that is specifically tailored to the unique requirements of the aging population.

  • Empowerment: Ensuring elderly individuals maintain their autonomy and dignity.

The Role of a Geriatric Physiotherapist

The Physiotherapist plays a vital role in the Vriddha Mitra program, moving between home-based care for immobile individuals and group therapy sessions within the community.

Key Objectives include:

  • Enhancing Mobility: Designing safe, age-appropriate exercises to improve joint flexibility and circulation.

  • Pain Management: Implementing strategies to reduce pain and enhance functional independence.

  • Preventative Care: Supporting the prevention of complications like joint stiffness and bedsores in bedridden patients.

  • Caregiver Support: Educating and empowering families to continue essential care and supportive techniques at home.

Clinical Excellence and Responsibilities

Selected candidates will be responsible for a wide range of clinical and coordinative tasks:

  • Assessment & Planning: Assessing the needs of elderly individuals via home visits or Virtual OPD consultations and designing tailored therapy plans.

  • Bedside Care: Conducting gentle movements, stretching, and breathing exercises for those with limited mobility.

  • Team Collaboration: Working with Community Officers, Cluster Coordinators, and doctors to ensure seamless service delivery.

  • Documentation: Maintaining accurate records of patient progress and therapy outcomes to support program monitoring and evaluation.

Who Should Apply?

SCHOOL is looking for compassionate professionals who possess a Bachelor’s degree in Physiotherapy (BPT) and registration with the relevant statutory council.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience in geriatric physiotherapy or community-based healthcare.

  • The ability to work with bedridden patients with empathy and patience.

  • Strong fieldwork adaptability and problem-solving skills.

  • A commitment to ethical practice and respecting the privacy and autonomy of the elderly.

This field-based role offers a unique opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of the elderly in Mumbai, ensuring that the "last mile" of healthcare truly reaches those who need it most.
